Exhibit in the column

The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

This is a credential shot, not a design: the informal mid-gesture pose and the pipe read as a man caught working rather than posed, which is what makes a portrait plate feel like reporting instead of promotion. The title Prof. does the entire persuasive job in two syllables, and setting it as the only line of type means it cannot be skimmed past. The plain ground and the tight crop force attention onto the face, which is the point when the face is being introduced as a signature.

Steal this when

Steal this when the person is the proof and the reader has only ever seen the work. A plain crop, a working gesture and one line carrying the credential beats any staged environment shot.
