For sale here. The yellow book, contents of vol. IV, January 1895 - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.
Define
An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.
Mechanism
In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.
Verdict
Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.
Why it works
The sheet treats a contents list as the selling argument rather than as back matter, because for this readership the names are the product - it is proof by roster, and it lets the poster be long without being windy. The black-and-white illustration is placed as a full column, not as decoration, so the magazine's visual identity and its literary identity are weighed equally on the page. The two Beardsley drawings are deliberately opposite in weight - one nearly all solid black, one nearly all open line - which demonstrates the range inside the volume in two glances. Bracketing the whole thing between the same fat capitals top and bottom turns a dense text page into a poster that still functions at shop-window distance.
Steal this when
Use this when the buyer knows and values the individual names inside the product - an anthology, a conference, a course, a compilation. Lead with a short retail line, give the whole middle to the roster set as a readable list, and bracket it with heavy display type so it works as a display piece rather than a handbill.
