The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Alternating heavy and light lines turns one sentence into three retrievable facts - what, which shop, which city - so a reader scanning the back pages gets the whole message from the bold lines alone. The shop name is set at the same weight and width as the magazine's own name, which puts seller and title on equal footing and transfers the bookshop's standing to the magazine. Nothing is spent on ornament, so the only variables in play are size, weight and space.

Steal this when

Steal this when the only thing you need to communicate is where to buy, and the retailer's name carries more weight with that audience than any argument you could write. Alternate weights line by line so the bold lines alone still read as a complete sentence.
