Define
An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.
Mechanism
In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.
Verdict
Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.
Why it works
Weight contrast alone carries four levels of hierarchy - title, section, item, attribute - with no rules, boxes or ornament, which is the whole modernist claim demonstrated on a working document. Setting the colour name in light letterspaced capitals inside a bold section head makes the colour read as a parenthetical category rather than as a decoration. Continuous numbering across the three sections tells the reader the twelve dances are one sequence, while the three blocks tell them it is also three movements, so the structure of the piece is legible before it is seen. The columns are left ragged in width, so the eye tracks by column position rather than by leader dots.
Steal this when
Use this when a list has two or more attributes per row - a running order, a schedule, a fixture list, a spec table - and you want the structure of the whole to be visible at a glance. Set the levels in weight and size on an unruled grid instead of reaching for boxes and dividers.
