Exhibit in the column

Composition for Wendingen (published 1923)

The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The composition is held by a single diagonal that crosses the gutter, which forces the reader to treat the two pages as one surface instead of two. The word is rotated onto that diagonal so the name reads as a structural member, not a caption - it does the same job as the grey and blue bars stacked beside it. The right page is left almost empty on purpose: the mass sits left, the void sits right, and the half-disc at the right edge stops the eye from running off the page. Red appears once, as a flat plane, and is answered by a red dot a few inches away, which is all the colour the page needs.

Steal this when

Reach for this when a spread has to feel like one field rather than two pages - a magazine opener, a slide, a wide hero - and you want the title to carry weight without a headline block. Rotate the wordmark onto the composition's own axis and let one page stay almost empty.
