The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The poster wins by sheer density: the programme itself is the argument, and the reader is meant to scan the mass and conclude the town will be unmissable for ten weeks. Typographic hierarchy does all the sorting in one ink, with the anchor words CUARTO CENTENARIO, NUEVO MUNDO and HUELVA given weight, shading and a reversed box while the fifty-odd events are ranked by shrinking size, so a passer-by reads three words and a committed reader gets everything. Royal patronage and the Americanists congress are placed high in the stack as borrowed authority, and the travel discount is buried at the very bottom where it removes the last objection for anyone who has already read that far.

Steal this when

Steal this when the volume of your programme is the selling point and you are limited to one ink: rank everything by size in a single column and let the mass itself do the persuading. It is also the right pattern when third-party authority, a royal invitation, a congress, a named institution, is stronger than anything you can say about yourself.
