Why it works
The poster is drawn rather than designed - lettering and image made in one material and one sitting - so the sheet reads as a work of art instead of an announcement about one, which is the whole proposition of an art exhibition. The practical information is pushed into the two top corners in blocky lettering where it will be found but never competes with the figure. The shift from drawn capitals to script on the last line separates what is showing from where it is showing without a rule, a gap or a size change. Bare cream paper left around the figure does the job a printed border would, and costs nothing at press.
Steal this when
Use when the audience is buying the maker's hand and the medium is the message: a studio, a workshop, an exhibition, a craft product. Make the announcement in the same material as the thing being announced and exile the dates, times and logistics to the corners.
