Why it works
Stripped of its lettering the sheet shows what the finished poster is actually built on: a light corridor of pale church wall running top to bottom behind the crowd, with the darkest masses pushed to the outer edges and the foreground. That tonal corridor is why the red type at head and foot reads instantly on the finished version - the designer left a mid-value field for it rather than dropping type onto busy drawing. Proof states like this are worth studying because they separate the picture's own structure from the typographic layer, which is the fastest way to see whether a layout was designed or assembled.
Steal this when
Pull this trick when you want to test a layout honestly: print or export the artwork with all type removed and check whether the composition still directs the eye and still leaves a clean value zone where the headline has to sit. If the image only works once the type is on top, the image is not doing its job.
