Why it works
The poster works by pure opposition - chalk-soft, edgeless painting against mechanically hard black type, and it lets the two never touch. All the lettering is pushed onto the extreme top and bottom trim, which leaves the entire middle to the image and makes the sheet read as a picture with a caption rather than a notice with an illustration. The colour is doing structural work, not decorative: two blue corners on opposite diagonals stop a centred, symmetrical yellow mass from sitting dead, and the red edges keep the yellow from dissolving into the white. Setting the date at small size and splitting it left and right creates a base line that holds the bottom without competing with the word ZURICH. This is a fine-art painter using poster grammar rather than a poster artist borrowing painting.
Steal this when
You are announcing an exhibition, festival or anything whose product is aesthetic judgement, and the strongest argument you have is a single strong image. Push all the type to the trim edges, keep it hard and plain, and let the picture own the middle without a border.
