W.P.A. concerts of unusual music
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
Rotating every line to follow the shape of the object is what makes an ordinary listings poster feel like the modern music it is advertising - the form performs the claim of unusual. The piano silhouette does double duty as illustration and as the dark panel that the schedule is reversed out of, which saves a colour. Publishing all eight dates rather than saying weekly all summer gives the reader something to copy down, and the price sits last, at the end of the diagonal, where the eye exits.
Steal this when
Use this when you are advertising a series and the differentiator is character rather than content. Let one object silhouette both illustrate and hold the type, and print the full schedule instead of summarising it.
