Why it works
The design is built on one figure-ground decision: a white skeleton on a black field is the most violent contrast available, so the image reads at fifty feet and needs no second element. Setting the title in a serif rather than the geometric sans used across the rest of the Federal Art Project output signals period and danger at the same time. The skeleton is not illustrating a scene from the play; it is a mood advertised as a promise, and the drum turns death from a static symbol into something performing.
