Vossische Zeitung newspaper - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
A newspaper has no object to show, so Bernhard makes the lettering the object: the Fraktur is drawn heavy enough to function as an image, and the green bar acts as the negative shape a picture would have occupied. The three stepped dates do the persuasion by implication rather than assertion, since a reader who knows 1813 and 1870 supplies the patriotic conclusion himself. Green against black on cream keeps the poster to two inks while still giving the dates and the slashes an accent that pulls the eye down the stair to 1914.
Steal this when
Use this when your brand's strongest asset is longevity and the audience already knows the reference points, so a bare list of dates does more than any adjective. It is also the structure to copy when you have no product to photograph and the name itself has to be drawn large enough to work as the picture.
