Why it works
The type is laid into the waves instead of on a clear field, so the words read as an inscription cut into the sea and the sea becomes the gravestone. Withholding colour in a medium that had colour is the whole design decision; it separates the sheet from every commercial poster beside it on the hoarding and signals mourning before a word is read. Showing the ship at the instant of loss rather than sunk keeps the event in the present tense, which is what makes remembrance feel owed rather than historical.
