Why it works
The split face is a diagram, not an illustration - one image states the piece's subject, its emotional range and its modernist idiom simultaneously, so no descriptive copy is needed. Two diagonals crossing in the upper left build a wedge that funnels the eye down into the face, which is the standard way to give a static sheet motion appropriate to a dance bill. Scale contrast does the rest: the tiny coral dancer against the huge head establishes that the head is psychological rather than literal. Highlighting the single word DANCE in a second colour inside an otherwise monochrome producer line is a precise piece of hierarchy - it separates this bill from the Federal Theatre drama posters at a glance.
Steal this when
Steal the split-subject device when the thing you are selling is genuinely two-sided and you want the tension itself to be the image rather than a claim in the copy. The crossing-diagonals-plus-tiny-figure scale trick is also the fastest way to make a still layout read as movement.
