Streamlined Shakespeare - winter's tale and midsummer night's dream
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
The selling idea is in the first word - streamlined was the decade's vocabulary for modern, fast and frictionless - so the objection that Shakespeare takes all night is answered before the titles are read. CUT VERSIONS is then stated plainly, which keeps the promise honest rather than teasing. The one drawing is the ass's head, the single instantly recognisable emblem from either play, and it is left as open line work so it sits inside the type instead of competing with it. Colour is used to divide the sheet into what is playing in blue and where to go in red, and the venue name, not the playwright, is given the largest type because the address is what a passer-by needs to retain.
Steal this when
Copy this when the product is a familiar thing made shorter, faster or easier, and the whole pitch is the edit itself - lead on the reduction, then name it plainly. The two-colour split between offer and location is a clean model for any poster that must sell and direct at once.
