Why it works
The type is set in one weight and one colour and varied only by size, so a four-part message reads in a fixed order - venue, city, society, dates - without rules, boxes or a second typeface. Running the largest line the full width turns the name of the society into the image's baseline and stops the loose drawing from floating. Grading the ground rather than printing flat colour lets black drawing and magenta type both stay legible across the same sheet, and the drawing is credited to another hand while the poster is credited to the designer, which is why it can be gestural without looking like decoration.
