The value contrast is rigged so that the baby's eyes are the darkest thing on a nearly white sheet, which means the face wins the glance before any word is read. Everything else, including the mother, is deliberately left as unfinished suggestion, so the viewer's eye completes her and invests attention instead of just receiving it.
