Ontwerp voor een affiche voor het Internationale Eucharistisch Congres gehouden te Amsterdam van 22-27 juli 1924
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
The sheet shows the hierarchy being built before the drawing is finished: date panel small, event band medium, city name largest and in the only pure black on the page. Toorop locks the whole composition inside two nested borders so the sacred image reads as an icon or a stained window rather than an advertisement, which suits an audience that already accepts the symbolism. The chalice and host are placed dead centre at the optical middle of the figure, so the doctrinal subject of the congress is also the visual centre of the poster.
Steal this when
Steal this when you need to see the type hierarchy of a poster decided before the artwork is resolved - block the panels first, size them by what the audience must remember, and let the illustration fill the remaining space. Also useful when the event's own symbol can serve as the central image.
