Why it works
Genre is declared before the title: MYSTERY THRILLS-CHILLS tells a stranger what kind of evening this is in three words, so the odd, unfamiliar title never has to do explanatory work. The lettering itself is the mood - the shaky brushed caps look unstable and hand-cut, which sells unease more efficiently than any illustrated scene could. The lizard is the only pictorial element and it is placed as a vertical rule down the margin, so it organises the layout and creeps at the same time. Prices are broken into two labelled columns rather than a paragraph, which lets the cheapest option, the 25 cent matinee, be found instantly.
