Why it works
The poster substitutes one emblem for a subject that has no image - you cannot draw hygiene, so Stuck draws the eye that inspects, and the radiating lashes let it double as a sun rising over the building. Scale does the stopping: the eye is sized to be read across a street, while all the information is compressed into a single dark tablet that only rewards you once you are close, which is the correct division of labour for a street poster. Hand-lettering the announcement rather than setting it in type ties the words to the drawing so the whole sheet reads as one made object, and the archaic V-for-U spelling gives an exhibition about modern sanitation a deliberately classical, monumental voice.
Steal this when
Reach for this when you are selling something abstract - an event, a cause, a discipline - that has no photographable product. Invent one emblem that carries the idea, blow it up to occupy most of the sheet, and park every date and detail in one small high-contrast block at the bottom.
