Why it works
Recolouring the same drawing changes what the poster does at distance: putting the type inside a solid black cartouche gives the headline the highest contrast on the sheet, so this version reads name-first while the ochre version reads image-first. The red field plus gold border is a pure stopping device - the two loudest inks available to a lithographer in 1912 - and the black picture ground behind the figure keeps the flesh tones from dissolving into the red. Value is controlled rather than colour: black for type, gold for frame, red for field, and only one small red object inside the picture, the caduceus, which is why the eye finds it. Comparing the two states is the real lesson - identical drawing, identical layout, opposite reading order, decided entirely by where the darkest ink sits.
