Why it works
Restricting the entire poster to one crayon on white gives the sheet an unmistakable identity on a wall of colour lithographs - absence of colour becomes the differentiator. The lettering block is built as three progressively heavier lines so the eye descends naturally from city, to occasion number, to the category words set largest, which resolves a long unwieldy official title into a readable hierarchy without any change of typeface. The drawing is left deliberately open and unfinished so the white of the paper flows between picture and type and the two halves read as one surface. Putting the dates on one unbroken bottom line, with the year enlarged, means the two facts a passer-by must retain sit at the natural end of the read.
