Why it works

The lettering is the illustration. Nineteenth-century shaded wood-type forms signal period melodrama instantly, so the poster sells the joke - an antique moral drama played for fun - through typography rather than through a description. The tipped bottle and the drained glass state the plot in three objects, which is why the sheet needs no figures at all. The two selling lines are separated by function: the Barnum line supplies authority and age, the rip-roaring melodrama line supplies the emotional promise, and the oversized exclamation mark belongs to the second, giving the barker's tone a piece of punctuation to live in.

Steal this when

You are reviving something old and the period itself is the appeal. Set the whole thing in the era's own display faces, prove the pedigree in one short line, then tell the reader plainly what feeling they are buying.
