Exposition Hollandaise
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
Two inks only, black and oxblood, and the red is spent solely on the dates and the charitable cause, so the two facts that need to move someone to act are the only coloured things on the sheet. The face is period shorthand, a Frans Hals type, which says Dutch old masters without the poster having to argue it, and the head looking off-frame rather than at the viewer keeps it a portrait rather than a pitch. The display lettering is drawn to look hand-cut and slightly unstable, which reads as artisanal against a fine-art subject. The diagonal pale collar is a light mass that separates the two type zones so a crowded sheet still breathes.
Steal this when
Use this when a cultural offer is also a charitable appeal and both have to be legible at once. Run the whole sheet in one dark ink, then spend a single second colour only on the dates and the cause.
