Why it works
The poster spends almost all of its area on the title, which is the only thing a passer-by needs to recognise; venue and date are compressed into a single reversed band so they are found once the title has done its work. Stacking the title in three stepped lines creates a triangular void on the left, and the illustration is dropped into that void rather than given its own space, which is why a poster with one big word still feels composed. The mask is fused with the 'L' stem, so image and type cannot be read as separate layers. Two ink colours plus the stock, with the second colour reserved for the band, the mask and the supporting lines, keeps the black title unrivalled.
Steal this when
When you are promoting a dated, one-off event and the name of the thing is the strongest asset you have. The stack-and-fill layout is the one to copy whenever a long title must dominate and an illustration has to live inside the shape the title leaves.
