Detailontwerp van een vrouwenhoofd voor een affiche voor het Internationaal Eucharistisch Congres gehouden te Amsterdam van 22-27 juli 1924
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
The face is finished to a much higher resolution than anything around it, which is exactly how the final poster is meant to be read - the eyes are the only fully modelled thing in an otherwise flat, ruled design. Working the head as a separate square study lets the expression be settled without the border, lettering and symbols pulling on it. The blue chalk is laid in as flat granular tone rather than modelled shading, which is a printing decision made in the drawing: it tells the lithographer this area is one colour.
Steal this when
Do this when one element of a layout carries all the emotional weight - build it to final quality on its own sheet at final size, then assemble, rather than trying to resolve it inside the full composition. Especially useful when the same face or object has to appear across a campaign.
