Why it works
The woodcut states the thesis before a word is read: by putting the Crucifixion in a Flemish wheatfield with a parish church and a windmill, the image argues that this art belongs to these viewers' own soil, which is the whole position of the group. The typography is a strict hierarchy of decreasing size and increasing density, so one sheet works at two reading distances - name, what, when, free from across the street, then the full four-week schedule once you step up to it. Repeating Inkom vrij twice, boxed, on both sides of the opening line kills the single objection that stops a general public walking into an art show. The dated, named programme converts a static exhibition into a series of appointments, giving a reason to come back rather than to visit once.
