Why it works
The portrait carries the sell because the subject needs no introduction, so the copy spends its words on where and when instead of who. Cropping Lincoln off the top and right edge forces intimacy at poster scale - you get the face, not a statue. The dark coat is used structurally: it drains into a solid block that becomes the type panel, so illustration and text share one shape and the reversed title looks inevitable rather than placed. The single line of script, Now Playing, breaks an otherwise all-caps sheet and is where the eye rests before it reaches the title.
Steal this when
Steal the portrait-that-becomes-the-panel move when your hero image has a large dark mass you can extend into a text field. Steal the one-script-line-in-an-all-caps-layout device when you need a soft timeliness cue without adding urgency copy.
