Why it works
The poster substitutes a symbol for the product. Nobody can picture an unseen group exhibition, so von May puts the city's own coat-of-arms animal on the sheet and stages a coronation of it - recognition transfers from the emblem to the artists. The lettering is drawn, not set, so headline, panel and date line share one weight and the sheet reads as a single object rather than type over a picture. Three flat inks plus black keep the separations cheap and legible at street distance, and the black bear against the white sky gives a silhouette that resolves from far away before any word is read.
Steal this when
You are announcing an event whose content cannot be shown - a conference, a group show, a season launch - and need one image to stand for all of it. Borrow the local or category emblem the audience already recognises and put it in a small ceremonial act.
