Affiche voor het Internationaal Eucharistisch Congres, 1924
The pattern
This still is filed under Event symbol poster.
Define
A symbol or allegory that makes an event feel like a destination. Not a timetable. A magnet.
Mechanism
Attraction by emblem. Date and venue ride under a picture that already means come.
Verdict
We are filling a room, a night, or a run of dates
Why it works
Everything in the drawing is ruled to the same narrow vertical grid - veil, rays, background panels - so an ornate religious image still reads as an ordered, almost architectural surface, which is what keeps it modern rather than sentimental. The lettering is geometric sans set in four graded sizes, and the title, the event and the city and date each get their own line, so the whole sheet can be scanned in one pass. The one gold object at the centre is the only warm saturated colour against teal and cream, which locks the eye on the subject of the congress itself.
Steal this when
Use this when the artefact has to survive the event - a commemorative or keepsake piece where the design must stay on someone's wall rather than sell a ticket. The ruled-facet treatment is the move when ornate subject matter needs to be pulled back into a disciplined grid.
