Why it works

The mosaic conceit does two jobs at once: it converts a cheap theatrical likeness into something that reads as civic and permanent, the visual language of church and public-building decoration, and it gives the lithographer a way to build an enormous flat field of warm colour that stays interesting at distance. The fan-shaped tile courses radiate from the skull, functioning as a drawn halo that forces the eye to the face from any viewing distance. Holding the name back to a single cartouche at the foot means the face does the recognition work first and the type only confirms it, which is the correct order for a star whose likeness is already the asset. The checkerboard border is pure edge tension - a hard high-contrast rhythm that stops the warm interior from bleeding into a papered wall of competing bills.

Steal this when

Steal this when the person is the product and their face already carries recognition: give the portrait the full sheet, treat the background as a decorative field that radiates from the head, and demote the name to a single confident line at the bottom.
