Advertising posters for Ivens & Co and Guy de Coral & Co
The pattern
This still is filed under Demonstration ad.
Define
The product does the arguing. The viewer sees the thing work, not a slogan about the thing working.
Mechanism
Proof by performance. The claim is the action: a visible, testable result the reader can replay.

Why it works
The shop sells hundreds of items and shows none of them; it shows the act instead, which is the only thing every possible customer has in common. Two inks and pure outline give maximum contrast at distance and let the bellows and the profile read as one silhouette. The typographic architecture does the retail work - trading name and category in the top band, city and street number in the bottom band at display size, the branch towns boxed off - so the picture never has to carry an address.
Steal this when
Your business is a whole category of goods rather than one product. Advertise the activity the customer wants to perform, and let a rigid type band handle the name, the category and the locations.
